Bytecoin ($BCN) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency created with the CryptoNote protocol, which enables anonymous transactions using CryptoNote ring signatures to sign a message on behalf of a group. With Bytecoin, users can send completely untraceable transactions while hiding their identities, making it ideal for privacy-conscious individuals. The platform uses a variation of the Diffie-Hellman exchange protocol to create multiple unique one-time addresses for each recipient, making it impossible to cross-link these payments.
Bytecoin is a peer-to-peer payment system, similar to Bitcoin, that allows users to send and receive payments without relying on intermediaries. It was one of the earliest cryptocurrencies developed, having been created in 2012. To address the centralization issues inherent in Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus algorithm, Bytecoin uses Egalitarian PoW, a version of scrypt that is not memory bound. This allows for highly efficient CPU mining rigs, thus narrowing the gap between powerful GPU and ASIC miners and those using CPUs.
Although Bytecoin's development has been fractured since its inception, the team has recently made efforts to increase transparency and engage with the community. They have been working on refactoring their code and plan to release a new public API. Additionally, they are expanding their reach to the Asian, Middle Eastern, and African markets in 2018. The Bytecoin team remains anonymous to some extent, providing only names and headshots on their website, but this aligns with the project's privacy-focused ethos.
