Hedera Hashgraph is a platform that promotes itself as a more secure and faster alternative to blockchain.
It avoids energy-intensive mining by utilizing a technology known as Directed Acyclic Graph.
Hashgraph is not a blockchain in the traditional sense of being built on a chain of blocks. Imagine it as a graph, with the speed of verifying transactions increasing as more transactions are added to the network. The technology on which it is based is known as a DAG, which stands for Directed Acyclic Graph. This technology is intended to assist Hedera Hashgraph in exceeding 100,000 transactions per second, allowing it to compete with Visa and other mass-market payment systems.
The Hedera network currently processes 6.5 million transactions per day with an average transaction time of 5 seconds, easily outnumbering Ethereum's 1.2 million and Bitcoin's 300,000 combined.
Hedera Hashgraph, unlike many other cryptocurrencies, is not open source. Instead, the technology is patented, making it impossible for developers to fork the protocol and create their own public versions. Furthermore, some criticize its centralized nature.
