The native cryptocurrency of Stellar is the Lumen (XLM). Stellar is an open source blockchain payment system. Stellar's mission is to connect financial institutions via the blockchain and to make transactions in emerging markets more affordable. Jed McCaleb, a seasoned cryptocurrency entrepreneur who co-founded bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox and blockchain payment system Ripple Labs, founded Stellar in July 2014. Stellar validates transactions using a federated byzantine agreement (FBA) algorithm rather than a traditional mining network. Due to the fact that the transfer of lumens is not subject to approval by traditional cryptocurrency miners, the Stellar network enables transactions to occur more quickly than with some other blockchain-based systems.
